Mathematics

At Streeton Primary School, we are committed to developing confident, capable and successful mathematicians through evidence-based teaching practices. Our mathematics program is grounded in the Science of Learning and delivered through Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI), ensuring every student receives clear, structured and purposeful teaching.

Using high-quality, research-informed programs aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, students are taught mathematical concepts through carefully sequenced lessons that build knowledge and understanding over time. Each lesson begins with a review of previously learned content to strengthen retention and support long-term learning. Teachers clearly communicate learning intentions and success criteria, helping students understand what they are learning and what success looks like.

New concepts are introduced through explicit teaching and teacher modelling, using worked examples and guided practice to support understanding before students move to independent application. Teachers regularly check for understanding throughout lessons and provide immediate feedback, ensuring students remain engaged and experience success.

Students develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills across all areas of mathematics, including number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability. Through consistent lesson routines and high expectations, students build confidence in applying mathematical thinking to a variety of contexts and real-world situations.
