Kitchen
At Streeton Primary School, our Kitchen Program gives students the opportunity to discover the joy of cooking while developing practical skills for life. Our program is based on the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program Syllabus, embracing the belief that hands-on experiences with fresh food, gardening and shared meals can nurture confident, curious and healthy young people.
Through weekly Kitchen lessons, students from Prep to Year 6 explore fresh, seasonal produce and learn how food moves from our garden to the table. In our fully equipped Kitchen classroom, students develop confidence with essential skills including safe tool handling, knife skills, measuring, grating, zesting, cracking eggs and using kitchen equipment.
Whenever possible, students harvest herbs and vegetables from our school garden, creating a meaningful connection between growing, preparing and enjoying fresh food. This year students investigated how ingredients work together as they prepare salads, dressings, pesto, bruschetta, herb-infused cordials and flavoured butters, while exploring cooking techniques such as roasting, baking, par-boiling, steeping and mixing.
More than just cooking, the program fosters creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, independence and pride. Students develop an understanding of flavour, nutrition and seasonal produce while building positive relationships with food. Their enthusiasm often extends beyond the classroom as they share new skills, recipes and experiences with their families.
Through the Kitchen Program, students are encouraged to become adventurous food explorers, confident cooks and thoughtful contributors to a healthy, connected school community.
Farm
The Streeton Primary School Farm Program provides students with unique, hands-on learning experiences that connect them with nature, sustainability and food production. Through caring for animals, growing produce and exploring our pond environment, students develop valuable knowledge, practical skills and a deeper understanding of the natural world.
Our program encourages curiosity, responsibility and environmental stewardship. Students investigate ecosystems, observe life cycles, explore biodiversity and learn where food comes from through authentic, real-world experiences. The school pond offers rich opportunities for scientific inquiry, allowing students to study aquatic environments and the interconnectedness of living things.
The Farm Program supports student wellbeing by providing meaningful outdoor learning experiences that build confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging. Students develop important life skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving and responsibility while caring for animals and maintaining farm environments.
By engaging with sustainability, food production and environmental conservation, students become informed and responsible citizens who understand the impact of their choices on the world around them.
